Melodic development

Students add a song to their repertoire featuring the rhythm syllable tim-ka.

If You're Happy And You Know It

  • This cute song may be familiar to students from early childhood.
  • The song comprises the rhythm syllable tim-ka throughout and is a perfect vehicle to present tim-ka to students in combination with Donkey Riding below.
  • When secure, introduce the idea of two sounds on one beat, the first long, the second short.
  • Sing the song and have students clap the words.
  • Ask how many beats in the second measure [4]
  • Ask how many sounds are on each beat [2]
  • Ask if the sounds are the same length [no, the first is longer than the second]
  • Teach if there are two sounds on one beat, the first long and the second short they have the rhythm syllable tim-ka.

  • Lead the class in singing Donkey riding.
  • When secure, focus on the first measure.
  • Ask the metre of the song [2-metre]
  • How many beats in 2-metre? [2]
  • Sing and clap the first measure.
  • Ask how many sounds in the first beat [two]
  • Ask if the first sound is longer than the second [yes]
  • Teach if there are two sounds on one beat, the first long and the second short they have the rhythm syllable tim-ka.
  • Project the score and show tim-ka.

Students improvise body movements to a song.

Improvise movements to a song

  • Students form a circle. You might want to use this song first as a game before presenting tam-ti above.
  • Lead the class in singing If You're Happy and students will clap after every line.
  • They sing again but change out 'clap your hands' to 'stomp your feet' and perform that movement.
  • Ask a volunteer for a new phrase to be sung, such as 'nod your head' or 'shout hooray', 'tap your nose', etc.

  • Divide the class into two groups.
  • Lead the whole class in singing the song.
  • When secure, the first group will sing from the beginning.
  • The second group will sing from the fourth measure.
  • Both groups should repeat until your command to stop.
