This lesson revises prior learning on rhythm syllables, including ta, ti-ti, too, za and tika-tika.

Rhythm - ta & ti-ti

Students revise ta & ti-ti

Questions on ta & ti-ti

  1. What name is given to one sound on the beat? [ta]
  2. What name is given to two sounds on the beat [ti-ti]
  3. Write Goodnight using stick notation.
  4. What is the name of this song
  5. Sing Kangaroo with time names.

Rhythm - metre

Students revise 2-metre and 4-metre.

Questions on 2-metre and 4-metre

  • What does a 2 at the beginning of a song mean [2-metre]
  • How many beats are in one measure of 2-metre? [2]
  • In 2-metre, is the pattern of beats weak, strong or strong, weak? [strong, weak]
  • Students choose a song in 2-metre and sing it using time names.
  • Show how to conduct in 2-metre.
  • What does a 4 at the beginning of a song mean? [4-metre]
  • What is the pattern of strong and weak beats in 4-metre? [strong, weak, weak, weak]
  • Are the rhythm patterns shown on the board in 2-metre or 4-metre?

Rhythm - za

Students revise the one-beat rest, za.

A beat of silence - za.

  • What is a beat of silence called? [za]
  • Draw the symbol for za in your notebooks.
  • How can we show za with our hands? [move hands apart on your lap]
  • Sing Bow Wow Wow using time names, including za.

Rhythm - too

Students revise the minim, with time name too.

Too - a note lasting for 2 beats.

  • When a note lasts for two beats, what is it called? [too]
  • How many ta's are equal to too? [2]
  • How many ti-ti's are equal to too? [4]
  • Sing Here Comes A Magpie. Where in the song is a note lasting two beats? [on the word "Hey"]
  • Write the symbol for too in your notebooks.
  • Sing the second line of Magpie using time names.

Rhythm - tika tika

Students revise four sounds on a beat.

Tika tika - four sounds on a beat.

  • What is the time name given for four sounds on the beat? [tika tika]
  • Sing the song Dinah and clap the rhythm.
  • Where can we find an example of tika tika in the song? ["No one in the house..."]
  • Draw the symbol for tika tika in your notebooks.
